Identification

Abstract

This dataset present the bedrock geology of the Paskapoo Formation in Alberta and its surroundings. The study area extends north of Whitecourt and to the west of Lethbridge. The Paskapoo Formation overlies the uppermost coal seam of the Ardley coal zone of the Scollard Formation. Discontinuous deposits of Neogene gravel or Quaternary sediment unconformably overlie the Paskapoo Formation. The Paskapoo Formation comprises three units. The lowermost unit is correlative with sandstone of the Haynes Member (Haynes aquifer). Overlying the Haynes aquifer is a regionally extensive mudstone- and siltstone-dominated unit correlative with the Lacombe Member (Lacombe aquitard). The uppermost unit is a sandstone-dominated unit, named the Sunchild aquifer.

The dataset comes from the GW_TEST.BDR_Fm_AB file of the CAL_TEST - GW test - RO.sde geodatabase. The dataset was cut using ArcGIS to show only the studied area of the Paskapoo unit (limites_paskapoo.shp). The data regarding the units description is form the Lexicon of Canadian Geological Names. Bedrock geological units were assigned a lithologic class based on the dominant compositionwas, with the understanding that some units are too complex to be assigned a single lithologic class, in order to render the map in a uniform national map. The original classification of the unit is still available in the dataset, along with a link to the Lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units (http://weblex.nrcan.gc.ca/). The GeoSciML / IUGS lithological classification has been used as a standard earth material vocabulary (http://resource.geosciml.org/).
