Identification

Abstract

The model was developed under the Geologcial Survey of Canada's NATMAP (National Mapping Program) and Groundwater Program in collaboration with partner agencies (e.g., Ontario Geological Survey, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Conservation Authorities Moraine Coalition). The model consists of a series of gridded surfaces that define the top and bottom of 5 Quaternary stratigraphic units plus bedrock surface. The modelled units are, stratigraphically from oldest to youngest: 1) Paleozoic bedrock (B/R), 2) Lower sediment (LS), 3) Newmarket Till (NT), 4) Oak Ridges Moraine and channel sediment (OMR), 5) Halton Till (HT), and 6) Glaciolacustrine and Recent sediment (GL/R).

Goals

A central focus of the joint Geological Survey of Canada / Ontario Geological Survey Oak Ridges Mo-raine (ORM) Project was to update the Quaternary geological map coverage of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and construct a 3-D geological model of the strata. The updated mapping and 3-D model along with numerous publications detailing aspects of the conceptual geological understanding were intended to provide regional context for more detailed, site-specific studies.

The 3-D model is a rendering of the Quaternary sediment that comprises the complex aquifer/aquitard complex of the Oak Ridges Moraine and Greater Toronto Area, southern Ontario. The Quaternary sediment in this study area is categorized into 5 stratigraphic units. From oldest to youngest these units are: 1) Lower sediment (LS) The LS unit is actually a grouping of several pre-Late Wisconsinan formations. 2) Newmarket Till (NT) Dense stony silty sandy diamicton. This till sheet is 5-30 m thick. The till is a reliable regional subsurface marker horizon. 3) Oak Ridges Moraine and channel sediment (ORM) The ORM is an extensive stratified deposit, ~160 km long, 5-15 km wide and of variable thickness. ORM ridges formed during a rapidly deposited sequence of high-energy, west-flowing meltwater events. Subglacial. 4) Halton Till (HT) Halton sedimentary architecture and facies are interpreted as deposition in an ice-marginal or subglacial lake bounded by Niagara Escarpment, ORM, and grounding line. Large volumes of transported mud are distal equivalents of ORM gravelly sand deposits to the east. Glaciolacustrine sedimentation is indicated by mud-rich texture and laminations. 5) Glaciolacustrine and Recent sediment (GL/R). Thin deposits of sand, silt and clay are found related to a series of lake levels. As water levels fell to Lake Ontario levels, rivers incised deeper, leaving raised terraces and creating new floodplains.
Surficial geological map. Archival well records. Geophysical data.
The modelling process consists of 4 main steps: i) data preparation, ii) training surface construction, iii) final surface construction, and iv) confidence grid construction. The majority of effort in each of the first 3 steps involves the incremental development of a set of 5 stratigraphic datasets that are interpolated to serve as the basis for subsequent steps. The Natural Neighbour method in MapInfo Professional® with Vertical Mapper™ was used for surface interpolations. In the final step, a semi-quantitative confidence grid was constructed to indicate the level of data support for each modelled surface.
Surface geology map at 1:50 000 scale. 4700 archival boreholes and test pits from OGS regional mapping, geotechnical engineering reports (e.g., foundation studies) and hydro-geological site investigations. 31 continuously cored boreholes. ~50 line-kilometers of seismic reflection data. Over 9,000 field mapping sites. Over 60,000 provincial water well records were obtained and incorporated into the modelling process. In lesser-developed areas, water well records often provided the only source of sub-surface information for several kilometers. An invaluable source of hydrogeological data, the water well database was, however, used with caution due to issues of data quality, reliability, and resolution (Russell et al., 1998).
