Abstract

As part of a groundwater thematic study by the Geological Survey of Canada, a 3D geomodel (24 x 11 km) was developed for a continuous esker segment in the Abitibi area of Québec, Canada. This segment was chosen because it is representative of a glaciated environment where the ice retreated in contact with a large water body, here Glacial Lake Ojibway. The esker is water bearing, and the high groundwater quality and conflicting usage of the esker, such as sand and gravel exploitation, commercial water bottling, etc., have raised concerns from the principal user: Amos, a municipality of 14 000 people.

Goals

The goal is to understand the architecture of the surficial geology in relation with groundwater circulation patterns in the esker and surroundings to provide local authorities with a decision making tool for regulating activities on and near the esker.

Introduction
Stratigraphy definition 3D model creation
Process step Sources
The 3D geological model presents the superposition of the following geological units: 1) Roc Bedrock: Mainly composed of volcanic rocks but also of intrusive rocks. 2) Till Till: All tills undifferentiated. Very compact and fairly continuous on the territory but not much present under the esker. 3) Esker Glaciofluvial deposits: Mainly eskers. 4) Ojibway Glaciolacustrine deposits: Clay varves and silt. 5) Littoral Littoral deposits: Nearshore sands.

The geological model is rectangular with a length of 24 km and a width of 11 km. A series of 32 transverse and longitudinal cross-sections were constructed using DownHole Explorer™ software and are all separated by a distance of 1 km. Subsequently, the 3D geological model was constructed using Gocad® software by integrating the cross-sections, the bedrock topography, the DEM and the geophysical data. These geophysical profiles present the lateral extension of the esker under the clays in addition to providing information on the structures present in the esker. The geomodel comprises 5 geological units and the construction of the surfaces of their upper contact is realised from the oldest to the youngest (from bottom to top in general).
