Identification

Abstract

This map shows the bedrock geology in the Milk River Transboundary Aquifer region. The aquifer is bounded by the edge of the Disturbed Belt on the west, by the Cypress Hills on the northeast and the Bears Paw Mountains on the southeast. In ascending order, the geological units pass from shale (Colorado Group) to a sequence of shale, siltstone, sandstone and coal (Milk River Formation). This sequence is overlain by shale with few sandstone beds (Pakowki Formation). Shale decreases gradually giving way to shale, sandstone and coal seams overlain by sandstone and siltstones (Belly River Group) which is covered by shales of Bearpaw Formation. Surficial deposits overly these rock formations.

Creation of the bedrock geology for Milk River
Process step Sources
The bedrock geology map of Okulitch was integrated in ArcGis. The extent of the area and the legend was adapted for the study area. The legend was simplified to highlight the significant geologic units.
Okulitch AV, Lopez DA, Jerzykiewicz T., 1996. Bedrock geology, Lethbridge, Alberta-Saskatchewan-Montana. Precise date temporal extent is unknown; however the starting date is before 1996.
