Identification

Abstract

Oak Ridges Moraine (ORM) is located in the Greater Toronto area, in the south of Ontario. It extends eastward from the Niagara Escarpment and along the axis of the ORM located north of Ontario Lake. The ORM complex consists of a sequence of aquifers and aquitards. These consist of Halton Till and Newmarket Till. There are two main aquifers: Oak Ridges Moraine Sediment aquifer and Lower Deposits aquifer. These are separated by the aquitards however the leakge in the aquitards allow the connection between the aquifers. The dataset describes in details the surficial aquifer media and groundwater flow through the different hydrogeological unit. It also provides information on confinement, surficial sediment thickness, groundwater depth, surficial hydraulic conductivity, recharge and discharge, aquifer potential, groundwater usage and quality. The dataset is a summary of data and hydrogeological information for all aquifers, aquifer systems and hydrogeological contexts of the Oak Ridges Moraine project.

The dataset comes from the matriciels (ascii) file that was converted to a polygon type file using the ArcGIS Raster to polygon tool. The polygons were simplified using the Aggregate Polygons ArcGIS tool. The aggregation distance to combined the polygons was set to 300 m. Afterwards the Simplify Polygon ArcGIS tool was used to delete all polygons with an area less than 100 000 m² for some units and less than 500 000 m² for the other ones.
