Abstract

This dataset exhibits the bedrock geology of the Oak Ridges Moraine area, southern Ontario. The study area includes most of the Greater Toronto Area. The Paleozoic bedrock is composed of carbonates and shales. The pre-glacial differential erosion has resulted in more than 400 m of relief on the bedrock unconformity.

Introduction
General process description
Process step Sources
The dataset (Bedrock Geology MRD126-REV1.zip) was downloaded from the Ministry of Northern Development and Mines site (http://www.mndm.gov.on.ca/en/mines-and-minerals/applications/ogsearth). The geopoly.shp file was cut using ArcGIS to keep only the data related to the studied area (limites_orm.shp). Bedrock geological units were assigned a lithologic class based on the dominant composition, with the understanding that some units are too complex to be assigned a single lithologic class, in order to render the map in a uniform national map. The original classification of the unit is still available in the dataset, along with a link to the Lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units (http://weblex.nrcan.gc.ca/). The GeoSciML / IUGS lithological classification has been used as a standard earth material vocabulary (http://resource.geosciml.org/).
