Abstract

The Okanagan Basin is located in the southern interior of British Columbia and covers 8,200 km2 around the Okanagan Valley. This project, called Groundwater Assessment in the Okanagan Basin (GAOB), was completed under the Groundwater program, in the Assessment of regional aquifers towards a national inventory section. The area covered by the study is located in the Kelowna surroundings. The 3D geological model of the Okanagan Valley is presented as a relatively low resolution Gocad® voxet object (2,048,000 cells). The model contains 8 geological units and regional water bodies.

Introduction
3D model creation Stratigraphy definition
Process step Sources
The procedure of building a 3D model of the Okanagan Valley was automated using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) classification algorithm known from the field of artificial intelligence (e.g., Cristianini and Shawe-Taylor, 2000). An SVM classifier was built based on the points carrying information on the geological unit to which they belong. These points are also known as the SVM training set. After building the classifier, points in the rest of the model space (test set) were classified into eight geological units based on their coordinates. The Gocad 3D GIS software was used for verification of input data and subsequent evaluation of the SVM classification result. Two Gocad models were built based on the original point set, a high resolution voxet (12,800,000 cells) and a low resolution voxet (2,048,000 cells).

The sedimentary sequence reflects the time of deposition and changing depositional environments. 1) Solid bedrock foundation. 2) Old Sediments are found at the very bottom of the valley, directly on a solid bedrock foundation. It is a mix of glacial and non-glacial unconsolidated sediments including sand, silt, gravel and till deposited prior to the last ice advance. 3) They are largely covered by Rutland Aquifer also mainly aligned with the valley bottom. 4) A thick layer of Fraser Till blankets elevated areas in the east while in the west, till distribution is rather patchy. 5) Glacial contact sediments (glaciofluvial) are generally found at lower elevations and somewhat closer to the valley bottom except for the south-eastern part of the model, where they are interspaced with till. 6) Lacustrine sediments (Pentincton) centered directly in the valley. It is composed of deep water silts and clays with littoral and sublittoral sands as well as deltaic sands and gravels. 7) Fluvial sediments centered directly in the valley. 8) Two small patches of unclassified and/or organic deposits are seen in the central and north-western parts of the model.
The geological units are largely defined in terms of features that can be seen on air photos and outcrops.
