Abstract

This dataset describes the bedrock geology of the Gulf Islands in British Columbia, at a 1:250 000 scale. The Gulf Islands rocks are usually considered to be a form of equivalent porous media for groundwater flow because of its complex fracture network. The structural geology and hydrogeology resulted in definition of three hydro-structural domains as: 1) highly fractured interbedded mudstone (shale) and sandstone with small fracture spacing (˂10 cm); 2) less fractured sandstone with larger fracture spacing (˃1m) and; 3) fault and fracture zones with small fracture spacing (˂5 cm).

Introduction
General process description
Process step Sources
The dataset comes from the GW_Test.BDR_Fm_BC file of the CAL_TEST-GW Test-RO.sde database. The dataset was cut in ArcGIS using the gulf_islands_limits.shp file. The mame, des_en and unit_code fields correspond to the STRAT_NAME, ORIGINAL_D and STRAT_UNIT fields of the original file. Bedrock geological units were assigned a lithologic class based on the dominant composition, with the understanding that some units are too complex to be assigned a single lithologic class, in order to render the map in a uniform national map. The original classification of the unit is still available in the dataset, along with a link to the Lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units (http://weblex.nrcan.gc.ca/). The GeoSciML / IUGS lithological classification has been used as a standard earth material vocabulary (http://resource.geosciml.org/).
