Identification

Abstract

This dataset shows the bedrock geology of the Châteauguay River watershed. The crystalline and metamorphic rocks from Precambrian are exposed at the watershed head, in the Adirondacks high land, United States. In the Quebec area of the watershed, the sedimentary rocks are lying on the crystalline and metamorphic rocks.

The dataset was created using the bed_poly.shp file. Additional data (names and descriptions) found in the Châteauguay Watershed Atlas was added (p.23). Bedrock geological units were assigned a lithologic class based on the dominant composition, with the understanding that some units are too complex to be assigned a single lithologic class, in order to render the map in a uniform national map. The original classification of the unit is still available in the dataset, along with a link to the Lexicon of Canadian Geologic Units (http://weblex.nrcan.gc.ca/). The GeoSciML / IUGS lithological classification has been used as a standard earth material vocabulary (http://resource.geosciml.org/).
